Nearly a history-making night for Greene County

Friday nights at the Observer-Reporter are something I hope I never experience. Me? I'd much rather be out at a game. But in here working the phones, laying out pages, proofing copy and all that fun stuff is usually Dale Lolley and Chris Dugan, two veterans around the area that you all probably know.

Apparently around 8:45 p.m. or so Friday night, Dale noticed that all five Greene County schools -- Mapletown, Carmichaels, Jefferson-Morgan, Waynesburg and West Greene -- were winning and asked Dugan, "When do you think the last time was that all five won on the same night or the same weekend?"

Dugan thought it would be an easy find.

Dugan was wrong.

It took, I'm told, two days to find the answer. But rest assured, the Professor got to the bottom of it. The answer, it turns out, is Sept. 8, 1961 ... almost 51 years to the day of Dale's question.

Here are the five wins, with a much needed slap on the behind to microfilm and Google News Archives:

Carmichaels 25, South Union 0: Jim Stewart scores on two 17-yard runs.

Mapletown 19, Fairchance-Georges 13: Don ‘Bubba” Lewis runs for two touchdowns and passes for another.

West Greene 7, East Washington 0: An East Washington turnover sets up Glenn Tedrow’s six-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining.

Waynesburg 36, McGuffey 7: Jim Meighen and Bob Boyd each score 2 TDs for the Raiders.

Jefferson-Morgan 13, Mount Morris 0: Joe Burich (11 yards) and John Knapik (2 yards) score TDs for the Rockets.

**I take no credit for this research. All Chris Dugan, who now requires a really nerdy nickname on this blog.
