Some WPIAL playoff numbers

I've never heard a peep about the WPIAL slimming down its playoffs to eight teams per classification -- and nor will I ever champion limiting kids' opportunities to play sports, regardless of which one -- but it's hard to argue that the first round hasn't been competitive of late.

Take a look at last week's results, and you'll find this: 32 games decided by a total of 821 points, an average of 25.65 per contest. Class AA and Class AA were tied at 28.13 points per game, while Class AAA came in at 23.75 and Class AAAA at 22.63.

Overall, three of the games were decided by single digits. They were:

No. 11 Central Catholic 30, No. 6 Penn-Trafford 27
No. 11 Hopewell 14, No. 6 Hampton 6
No. 3 Central Valley 17, No. 14 Belle Vernon 16

Gonna hope the games are close this week, though the statistics don't exactly bear that out. Last year's WPIAL quarterfinals were decided by an average of 16.8 points per game ... 18.5/16.25/15.5/17 splits Class AAAA to Class A.
