Will be heading out to Canon-Mac tonight for Big Macs/Trinity at 7:30 p.m. Here are a few pregame notes:
Trinity (2-1, 8-3) at Canon-McMillan (1-2, 5-5)
Points for-Points against
*Trinity top scoring offense in Section 4-AAAA
**BACKGROUND: Hillers coming off a 60-51 loss to Butler in the Trinity Christmas Tournament. ... Butler used a 17-4 second quarter run to outlast Trinity. Christian Koroly had 21 points. ... C-M coming off a 76-42 win over Northgate in the Trinity Christmas Tournament. ... Four players reached double figures: Brett Haney 14, Sam Bohn 13, Seth Petras 12, Jake Cadez 10. ... C-M led 24-5 after one, 45-18, at halftime.
**LAST YEAR: Teams split two meetings. Big Macs won, 53-52, in the final of the 2011 EQT Energy Classic; Trinity responded with a 45-42 win on Dec. 28 in the Trinity Tournament. ... Teams did not meet in this year's EQT, but are in the same section since Trinity bumped up to Class AAA
**COACHES: C-M: Rick Bell; Trinity: Stan Noszka
**LOOKING AHEAD: Trinity will host Baldwin (0-3, 3-7) Tuesday; C-M will play Hopewell (2-7) Saturday in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown, tip at 7 p.m.
**PLAYERS TO WATCH: Canon-Mac is led by Brett Haney, who's averaging 13.0 points per game; Trinity relies predominantly on four seniors: Christian Koroly, Corey Hunsberger, Berton Miller and Jared Deep.
**COMMON OPPONENT: Both teams lost to Butler, Trinity by nine, Canon-Mac by eight.
**ANALYSIS: Don't expect a lot of chances taken early, or a lot of stupid mistakes. Both coaches are smart, veteran guys, and neither will want this one to get out of control early.
C-M's Sam Bohn and Jake Cadez do a nice job inside. So, too, does Trinity's Jared Deep. Not sure either team has an advantage around the basket. Trinity has a few more shooters in Koroly, Hunsberger and Miller; if they're on, look out. Haney is a dangerous scorer, though, and could go off for 25-30 points on any given night.
A loss for Trinity would hurt -- meaning the Hillers would have dropped three of four after a 7-1 start -- but a win would put them at 3-1 ahead of a very winnable home game against Baldwin. Canon-Mac needs a win to avoid falling to 1-3 in section ahead of a three-game stretch starting late next week that includes Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township and Bethel Park -- two of them road games -- in a seven-day stretch.
